Undertakers put away Gunners in King of the Hill Pee Wee Championship! Champs come from behind to win 7 - 5
The Undertakers came into the Pee Wee King of the Hill Final as the #1 seed despite suffering four straight losses in the always tough PW division during the regular KOH season. Injuries had played a part, but often it creates opportunities for others to step up. The Gunners, also one of the preseason favorites, had a steady regualr season, sitting near the top of the standings all summer long. This, my friends, had the making of a barn burner, big and strong versus quick and sneaky. Game on!
With less then one minute gone in the game, at the 14:14 mark, the Gunners stunned the crowd to take the lead. Nik Breiner with a nice goal off the goalie's shoulder, assist to Jack Bove. The pace quickened up and down the ice until the Gunners increased their lead at the 10:29 mark. Sean McGlaughlin with the shot and Jack Bove sliding towards the goal knocked in the rebound, Gunners2 - 0. But hey, this is the Undertakers we're talking about here. True to form, merely seconds later, while the Gunners were soaking in the 2 goal lead, Danny Barlok knocked in rebound off a Jake Fauler shot to cut the Gunners lead in half, 2 - 1. Period 1 ends, Gunners 2 - Undertakers 1.
Period 2 opens with the Undertakers on the powerplay; and they capitalize, Jake Fauler to Danny Barlok to Jack Bloem for a beautifully orchestrated tap in goal. Game tied 2 - 2. A minute or so later the Gunners replied with a very nice cross ice pass from Zach Watkins to Ethan Gulock who made sure down low, giving the Gunners the lead again 3 - 2. Seven minutes later the Gunners bolstered their lead to two, 4 - 2. A wild scramble around the Undertakers goal resulted in a very determined Chris Hunt tally as he swept the puck in the net, a great effort! With just 36 seconds left in the 2nd period, Jack Bloem crossed the blueline and sniped a screened Gunners goalie to pull the Undertakers within one, 4 - 3, assist to Nate Taubkin. Period ends.
Period 3 opens with intensity and pace. Neither team breaking down and giving an inch, until the 8:38 mark when the Gunner's Chris Hunt breaks in alone and "5 holes" the goalie upping the Gunners lead again to 2 goals, 5 - 3. You know what they say; "2 goal lead is the worst lead in hockey" ...... and this would turn out to be prophetic! At 6:36 on the game clock, Jack Bloem and Jake Fauler executed a nice give and go with Bloem finishing, Gunners up 5 - 4. At the 4:48 mark, Tyler Reyome ekes in a goal, assist to Tommy Pelletier, game tied, 5 - 5. Ninety seconds later Jack Bloem surprises everybody with a bad angle blast that went top shelf, giving the Undertakers their first lead of the game 6 - 5. A mere 10 seconds later Jack Bloem again with another top shelf blast iced the championship for the Undertakers, assist to Danny Barlok, 7 - 5 final score.
Congratulations to both teams for a very entertaining championship game and season! Good Luck this fall!
