Aubin Grove skate park plans shattered

ANY plan for a large skate park in an Aubin Grove park appears to have been wiped out following independent consultation with the local community.

Cockburn Council had supported the preparation of a conceptual plan for a small youth facility in Radiata Park, modeled on a community consultation by Ecoscape and Skate Sculpture.

However, the aforementioned skate park seems unlikely after the consultants found that there were significant limits on what a skate park at Radiata Park could include.

They found that the park could accommodate small elements of skating, as well as a small pump track, a three-on-three basketball court, or an obstacle course.

However, the council report said it would be difficult to build a large skating facility in the park while simultaneously balancing the demands of nearby residents to keep it an adequate distance from their homes.

The consultants also indicated that if a skatepark were to be built at an adequate distance from residences, it would conflict with the park’s current drainage function.

Last year, the town of Cockburn approved Radiata Park as the preferred option for a skate park in Aubin Grove, but the move was met with public opposition from neighboring residents.

A survey found that while the majority of respondents were in favor of adding a skate park somewhere in the suburbs, more than a third were strongly opposed to such plans.

Residents also claimed the investigation pitted those who lived near Radiata Park against those involved in sports clubs that use Aubin Grove Oval.

The Council ultimately supported another motion that removed any reference to Radiata Park as a prime location for a skate park.

Since the September decision, the City has held seven consultation sessions to understand what the community expected from the proposed park upgrade.

The consultation identified several other key points, including the desire to ensure that the design of new facilities should not negatively impact the existing uses and amenities of the park.

The town of Cockburn had previously proposed Radiata Park as the preferred option for a skate park in Aubin Grove, but residents spoke out against that and another motion for the town to hold a series of workshops to consider the design of facilities for young people more suitable when parking.
