The Avalanche selected a high school defenseman from Massachusetts and a goaltender from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with their only two NHL draft picks.
Colorado picked Chris Romaine (Milton Academy) at No. 193 and Ivan Zhigalov (Sherwood) at No. 225 on Friday with sixth- and seventh-round picks, respectively. The Avs were running out of extra draft capital after trading two 2022 picks and a 2023 pick on Thursday for Rangers goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.
Romaine, 18, is a right-handed defenseman at an independent varsity prep school just south of Boston. The 6-foot, 194-pound prospect has committed to playing hockey at Providence College. Romaine had 22 points (nine goals) in just 18 games during her senior high school season. His former AAA trainer, Dave Franzosa, provided a scouting report in a March interview with CapeCodWhalers.com.
“Christopher has become an elite defender who has a big impact on the game in all situations,” Franzosa said. “His skating, shooting, passing ability, physical strength and hockey IQ are all off the charts. … I think he has an extremely high ceiling in this sport and I can’t wait to see him play for years to come.
Zhigalov, 19, is a Belarusian who played 42 games in goal last season for the Sherbrooke Phoenix. The right-hand catching goaltender was 26-9-3 with an .892 save percentage. He boasts a tall stature at 6-foot-3 and 164 pounds. Central Scouting goalie evaluator Al Jensen shared his thoughts on Zhigalov in a June interview with NHL.com.
“He just has that presence around him and he behaves well,” Jensen said. “There’s so much to work for an NHL team and this guy has a very good chance of playing in the NHL one day; I really believe it. He’s got the size, the speed and looks like an NHL goaltender in there. »
