Skating on an ice rink is a thrill that Martin Hlinka seeks to share with hundreds – and one day thousands – of girls and boys from Seattle and the Pacific Northwest at the soon-to-be-completed Kraken Training Center.

“We want children to learn to skate first, to move,” says Hlinka, director of youth hockey at the training center. “You see the joy and the smiles when kids realize they can move on their own. They get better every time they’re on the ice.”

The improved skating and happy smiles will take place starting this fall at the Northgate District Three-Rink Training Center. Registration for the skating and hockey programs will open soon. You can Subscribe to our newsletter here to be notified of the registration start date and other details and news.

There will be a range of programs offered by the Kraken Youth Hockey Association and the Kraken Skating Academy, including an NHL Learning Program for girls and boys ages five to nine.

The seven-week NHL Learning Program includes free full gear, head to toe, helmet to skates and a stick. The program requirement is that children must be new to hockey and be between 5 and 9 years old. There are also Learn to Play programs for older children, adults, and children who have some hockey experience but may not yet be ready to join a team.

The Skating Association’s Learn to Skate program, overseen by Figure Skating Director Chad Goodwin, is the starting point for all participants.

“It all starts with Chad and the Learn to Skate program,” says Hlinka. “It’s our base for learning skills, so when they first put on their hockey gear in the Learn to Play NHL, the kids were already successful on the skates.

Goodwin and his colleagues will teach skating to all children (adult beginners will have similar opportunities) before the youngsters opt for hockey or figure skating tracks.

Note to Parents: Two of America’s most decorated female hockey players, pro scout Kraken Cammi Granato, and five-time world champion and four-time Olympian Julie Chu, started figure skating when mom and dad suggested. Both urged their parents to let them play hockey – and both at a time when there were no local girls’ hockey programs.

“We understand that every child will come from a different skating background,” says Goodwin. “They will be placed at the appropriate skill level and we will determine which skills to showcase. Our goal is for every skater to become confident on the ice.”

Early classes will likely include balance work and lean towards slow motion to highlight technique. The first day always includes a lesson on how to fall and protect yourself.

“It’s about maneuvering their bodies and staying safe,” says Goodwin. “Children learn to fall safely and get up on their own.”

the Learn to skate in the United States the program is approved by American hockey and American figure skating.

For hockey players, once they have completed the NHL Learn to Play program, they will move forward to continue developing their skills through the internal “Squid Squad” program. Children eight years of age and older will be able to compete in Jr. Kraken 8U, 10U and 12U League teams. Children keen to become figure skaters will join the Emerald Edge programs.

Hockey programs will follow Learn to play the NHL principles and format, as well as the integration of USA Hockey “Come play youth hockey“principles in all classes and team play.

One detail for parents new to the sport and / or who played themselves over ten years ago: in 2011, USA Hockey approved a rule prohibiting checking (using the body to disrupt an opponent) until what players reach level 14U.

Regardless of the skating choice, there will be “no screaming or screaming,” Hlinka says, and they “will do it in a fun way.”

The fun factor is worth repeating for emphasis. Rob Lampman, CEO of the Kraken Training Center, says: “We are committed to developing a culture at Kraken Training Center that reflects our organizational culture as a NHL team. We will develop our programs to be inclusive and supportive. , with a focus on moving the game forward through top-notch training and long-term athlete development. Above all, we always want to make it fun. “

Lampman takes the Kraken Training Center mission one step further.

“We have a responsibility at the Kraken Training Center to educate our players and the community at large not only about the game on the ice, but also about the culture of off-ice hockey. The game can offer so much on and off the ice. Through the Kraken, we hope to share the many experiences this game can offer to the community at large, young and adult players, families and fans, ”Lampman says. “We invite all members of the community to be a part of it, whether they are skaters or fans.”

Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva on the 2022 Olympic Winter Games: “That’s all that’s left” – OlympicTalk Wed, 28 Apr 2021 00:27:00 +0000

Twice Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu to the reigning world champion Anna shcherbakova, some of the biggest names in figure skating team up with a stuffed animal fans could throw on the ice following an epic performance.

Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva Could have hoped that wreaths would be thrown at the self-proclaimed “Empress” upon her arrival at the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships – her first appearance at the event since her victory in 2015. However, the absence of non-athletic spectators at The Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden left Tuktamysheva to summon an inner strength, a force that had already brought her back to the top of the sport after six years on the outskirts, to ultimately win a silver medal as part of the ‘a Russian sweep alongside Shcherbakova and Aleksandra Trusova.

“I had to believe that was not the end,” she told on Sunday. “I had to tell myself that I still had a future, that I had to keep going and that adversity would only make me stronger. Every time I’ve had a bad situation in my life I’ve told myself this. Bad things are going to happen, but I have to survive and move on.

“My career has been a lot like a mountain, something I climbed before I could climb again.

This rise was strewn with peaks and valleys during the last Olympic quadrennium. Tuktamysheva was on track for a place in the world team in 2019 after a bronze medal in this season’s Grand Prix final, only for pneumonia that forced her out of the Russian national championships. She eventually lost her spot to the Olympic silver medalist Yevgenia Medvedeva during a start for the Russian Cup final.

“I was really upset when I knew I wasn’t going to go into the world, and [that] has not been an easy time for me in my career, ”she said before laughing,“ I’ve been through a lot of times like this. “

This last season started off the same way; days after delaying Trusova and European champion 2020 Aliona kostornaya at the Rostelecom Cup, Tuktamysheva tested positive for COVID-19 and was off the ice for two weeks.

“I didn’t have terrible symptoms of COVID, just a fever for two days, and I remember feeling so tired. I’m glad I only got sick like this, and relieved it wasn’t anything worse.

Unable to afford another takedown, the 24-year-old made the trip to the Nationals, a thunderclap filled with teenage quad biking, and finished fourth among eligible athletes in the world to trigger another breakout. tie between her and Kostornaya – who had pulled out due to her own COVID diagnosis.

“I was happy to be able to show my programs at the national championships because it was important to be there and to skate as well as possible,” said Tuktamysheva. “I was happy that I didn’t fall with each jump and it wasn’t that bad!

“After COVID, it took a while to skate my free skate with good breath; I was getting tired faster than before. In the Russian Cup final, I realized I was back in shape and ready to compete.

A near-perfect free skate in Moscow – one that included a triple lutz-triple toe combination in addition to her pair of three-axis jumps – secured her a long-awaited return to the world, where she placed third in both games. of the competition. to finish second overall.

“For me, international competitions have always been less under pressure than those in Russia. Our national competitions have a good number of girls jumping in quads, and so when I went to the worlds I felt so much less pressure, and just… like I was able to appreciate the fact that I was am actually a very good skater. “

It is this kind of radical franchise that has helped make Tuktamysheva a fan favorite and one of the main figures in his sport.

“I feel people understand me because of my openness to them,” she explained. “I’m the same person on social media, in interviews, in real life, and I think that’s why people don’t just see me as an athlete, but as their friend. Their love and support gives me a lot of energy.

A season rich in domestic competition saw her gain the unlikely support of rivals like Shcherbakova, with whom she led Russia to a first World Team Trophy victory earlier this month. in which Tuktamysheva was the team captain.

“We started to look more like friends,” Tuktamysheva said. “She’s a really cute and sweet girl, and I feel comfortable around her. At competitions where her parents couldn’t be with her, I tried to keep her company.

Seven-year-old senior of Shcherbakova, Tuktamysheva does not envy the unique competitive atmosphere encouraged at the Sambo 70 club, led by the coach Eteri Tutberidze and home to a burgeoning new generation of Olympic-eligible talent such as the world junior gold and silver medalists Kamila Valiyeva and Daria Usacheva.

“I didn’t feel about the same amount of pressure at their age that I’m sure they feel now,” Tuktamysheva says. “It was another era in figure skating; the level was not as high so it was easier for me to feel confident about my place in the sport.

“At the same time, I was such a crazy girl growing up, and no one could stop me or say anything to me! I just lead with my mind.

Tuktamysheva’s triumphant victory in the 2020-2021 season puts her in a surprisingly good position to finally compete in an Olympics, having fallen short of the squad in 2014 and 2018. Looking to set her agendas with the famous coach Aleksei mishin before taking a short vacation in the Maldives, she plans to do everything she can to earn the only crown that is still missing from her collection.

“I had a lot of good times and had a long career,” she said. “An opportunity to finally make it to the Olympics would be the icing on the cake. In my wildest dreams, I see myself winning bronze, silver, gold, standing on this Olympic podium. It’s going to be so hard to get there, and I don’t want that to be my main goal for next season, but it would mean so much to me and my career to be able to make it to the Olympics.

“I’ve already done almost 100% of what I can do, and that’s all that’s left.”

Selma Gürbüz (1960–2021) – Artforum International Tue, 27 Apr 2021 20:57:43 +0000

Turkish artist Selma Gürbüz, known for her works depicting human-animal hybrids and dark, genderless figures, died on April 22 in Istanbul of complications from Covid-19. She was sixty-one years old. Over the course of a forty-year career, Gürbüz has built a multidimensional practice encompassing painting, sculpture, installations, video, weaving and printmaking, all in the service of the search for femininity and the relationship between humanity and nature.

“It scares me that we are preparing our demise with our own hands by destroying nature that we do not initially have,” said Gürbüz. Art Dog Istanbul earlier this year. “We don’t just determine our own fate; we are also destroying natural states that are millions of years old, the ecological balance that creates life on earth, its animals and plants. “

Born in Istanbul in 1960, Gürbüz began studying art education at Exeter College in the UK before focusing on sculpture and painting at the school’s College of Art and Design, where she is graduated in 1982. She obtained her MA in Fine Arts from Istanbul Marmara University in 1984, and two years later mounted her first solo exhibition in Istanbul. One of her early favorite methods was applying ink to handmade paper, a practice she began in the 1980s and will continue to employ throughout her career. She produced works in a cutout style reminiscent of Matisse’s and began painting in oil on canvas which was often handmade, further expressing her theme of connectedness. Gürbüz drew inspiration from Eastern and Western cultures, emphasizing the Ottoman Chintomani motifs and Persian-style motifs of the former, as well as the ideas about light and color of the latter. Although his palette was wide, black featured heavily from the start and would continue to do so, as Gürbüz often used the hue to limn blurry scenes and indistinct, shady beings.

“The shadow is invincible. Nothing can dominate the shadow ”, Gurbüz told Global Voices in 2020. “What is real does not change, but its shadow can change. The shadow is a two-dimensional representation. This shows us ourselves.

The artist’s sculptures, like his paintings and drawings, frequently depicted fantastic occupants of a dream world, representing a kind of intercultural and, in some cases, interspecific synthesis. Gürbüz has always been drawn to the concept of connectivity, between past and present, human and nature, myth and reality. His work embodying this idea was also informed by his practice of meditation and by his use while working of a Japanese breathing technique that required him to work on his knees while holding his breath.

Gurbüz’s work is kept in the collections of the British Museum in London, the Fondation Maeght in Paris and Anakara, the National Museum of Art and Sculpture of Turkey, as well as in those of Istanbul Modern, the Istanbul Bilgi University, SantralInstanbul and Proje 4L, all in Istanbul. “This place we call the world”, a retrospective highlighting the work inspired by Gürbüz’s recent trip to Africa, opened on November 5, 2020, at Istanbul Modern, before the artist fell ill. It remains visible until June 30.

Hagerstown Ice Rink Closed for Emergency Maintenance | Local News Tue, 27 Apr 2021 19:30:00 +0000

The Hagerstown Ice and Sports Complex is temporarily closed to resolve issues with its cooling system.

An April 14 post on the resort’s website and Facebook page said the issue prevented a small portion of the ice from freezing, which could not be repaired with the ice surface intact.

Hagerstown Ice Amateur Athletic Association board chairman Paul Sweeney said on Monday that the system that freezes the ice is directly below it, so the only way to fix the ice is to remove it.

The Hagerstown Ice Amateur Athletic Association operates the City-owned facilities of Fairgrounds Park.

Sweeney said there were about 63,000 feet, or about 12 miles, of pipe directly below the ice surface.

When a section of about 1 foot by 12 feet appeared “almost melted” a few weeks ago, Sweeney said the rink was closed to assess the problem. An oil clog was preventing refrigerant from moving through the piping.

Sweeney said the building’s temperature had been raised and lowered several times to “flush” the cooling system of excess oil.

While he is “fairly confident” that the clogs are gone, Sweeney said he doesn’t know how much oil was added to the 25-year-old system or why. He said rink staff members extracted about 75 gallons of oil from a system that should only have 20 to 25 gallons.

“It’s possible that we took advantage of it for the most part, but we have no way of really knowing that,” he said.

Sweeney said that while it is possible for the pipes to clog again, he doesn’t expect that to happen.

He said the HIAAA took over management of the rink in 2014 and “spent a lot of time and money addressing the lack of attention that was previously required to maintain this system properly.”

Late last year, General Manager Dan Lavallière located a refrigerant leak that melted ice. The ice was fixed, but there was some discoloration in the paint, Sweeney said.

Staff have already started to put the ice back, but the process is time consuming as only about a quarter of an inch of ice is deposited and frozen at a time. The mirror is also fully painted and marked with different lines.

Sweeney estimated the rink could reopen next Monday or Tuesday. Updates will be posted on the resort website,, and his Facebook page.

Hagerstown engineer Rodney Tissue said in an email Monday that the rink staff are doing the job, so there is no planned additional cost to the town.

Sweeney said most years since 2014, the ice has been melted and replaced during the summer. This year, the two-week process was scheduled for June 1-15 and will not have to happen now.

Hockey and figure skating schedules delayed due to the emergency closure will resume when the rink reopens.

Curator Meg Onli receives inaugural figure skating award – Tue, 27 Apr 2021 16:14:00 +0000

The first figure skating prize, an annual award given to black artists, curators and scholars who advance racial justice in the arts, went to Meg Onli, associate curator at the University’s Institute of Contemporary Art from Pennsylvania.

The award, administered by Figure Skating, an arts space founded in 2019 by Virgil Abloh, Mahfuz Sultan and Chloe Wayne, includes a $ 50,000 scholarship for a research project led by Onlie, as well as an unlimited amount of $ 25,000. With her earnings, she will research the colonialist foundation of museums and also oversee a series of related programs in the spring of 2022.

In a statement, Onli said, “My project started out as an initial investigation into alternative curatorial practices and I am delighted to be able to develop my own practice through conversations with colleagues in the field.”

In 2017, Onli organized “Speech / Acts,” an interactive group exhibition at ICA Philadelphia that explored black experimental poetry and the role of language in the experiences of black Americans. This show was followed by his critically acclaimed three-part exhibition, “Colored People Time,” which focused on the radical impact of slavery and colonialism on life today and included works by Cameron Rowland, Aria Dean , Carolyn Lazard, Martine Syms, etc. A solo show by Jessica Vaughn curated by Onli is due to end at the ICA on May 9.

Onli has also won a Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Fellowship, a Graham Foundation Fellowship and a Transformation Award from the Leeway Foundation, and was a 2018 Curatorial Fellow of the Warhol Foundation. In 2020, she appeared on ARTnewsthe list of “Decision-makers”.

“Figure skating is about documenting the aesthetic practices and traditions of black artists and intellectuals. It’s about writing our own stories and creating a space for our ideas to flourish independently of the traditional custodians of the art world, ”Abloh said in a statement. “We created the Figure Skating Award to amplify the work of the next generation of contemporary art leaders, and it is an honor to present the inaugural award to Meg Onli.
