ELIZABETHTON – The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department completed assembly of the Covered Bridge Park rink on Wednesday. The rink will open for its first customers at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Tickets for one hour sessions on synthetic ice are now $ 10. Tickets must be purchased online and are only available https://skatebythedoe.com. The price includes the rental of skates at no additional cost.
Public skating days are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. The skating will take place from Nov 27 to Jan 16. The synthetic rink does not require temperatures to be below zero to be operational. In addition to the public skating hours, there are also preparations for private rink rentals on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for private rentals for birthdays and other group events.
The rink is 60 feet long and 34.5 feet wide, for a total of over 2,000 square feet. The capacity is 30 skaters at a time. If the rink proves popular, the Parks Department will likely use a larger rink next year.
While the Covered Bridge Park will be occupied by skating, the Parks and Recreation Department’s Saturday pre-Christmas events will take place at Edwards Island, which will be transformed into an outdoor movie theater for the screening of “The Polar Express ”. The film is free.
The event, sponsored by Carter County Bank, begins at 4 p.m. and will feature free train rides for the kids, free roasted marshmallows, hot chocolate and cookies until 5:30 p.m. The film begins after dark. the night. The day will also include a visit from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Free horse-drawn carriage rides are also offered in the covered bridge park from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
