Figure skating predictions for 2022 Winter Olympics, Russia favorite

Many American fans will be supporting Nathan Chen as Russia provide a slew of figure skating talent at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

ATLANTA — Russia is determined to make it to the podium at this year’s Winter Olympics in figure skating, but the United States has a champion in the running. Until the judges return their scores, it’s still anyone’s game.

The Russian Olympic Committee will send several defending champions to Beijing this year for the women’s figure skating competition, including 2021 world figure skating champion medalists Anna Shcherbakova (gold), Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (silver) and Alexandra Trusova (bronze). Russia will also be looking to fill a void in the pairs competition, with 2018 German winners Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot missing this year. Russia’s Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov, the 2021 world figure skating champions, should perhaps take first place instead.

The clear favorite for women’s competition, however, is Russian Figure Skating Championship gold medalist Kamila Valieva, who beat Alexandra Trusova for first place in December.

In the men’s figure skating competition, two competitors stand out.

Back in the States, all eyes are on Nathan Chen, a six-time U.S. Figure Skating Championship gold medalist. Also a three-time World Figure Skating Championship gold medalist and Olympic team bronze medalist in 2018, Chen has a clear path to the podium this year. However, the American competitor will have a tough opponent in the person of Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu, gold medalist in the men’s competitions of the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics.

The 2022 Winter Olympics officially open on February 4 with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. Matches will start on February 2.
