For some, ice skating is a recreational activity. It is generally seen as a way to relax and cool off in a hot country like the Philippines. But for young and future figure skaters, it’s a sport that requires serious training.

For Cebuana figure skater Erphy Mackenzie, the sport is both a fun and challenging experience. “Walking on the rink makes me really excited. It helped me develop the discipline and focus to achieve my dreams,” said the 7-year-old ice skating wonder who won 6 gold medals at the recent Skate Asia 2022 held in Malaysia. .

Mackenzie was one of 24 young athletes who joined the ice skating development camp at SM Megamall. Organized by the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI) in collaboration with the International Skating Union (ISU) and the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU), the 11-day camp started on August 18, 2022 and ended on August 29 August 2022.

the figure skating development camp organized by ISAI held at SM Skating Megamall on August 29, 2022.

The camp was facilitated by ISU Technical Specialist Mr. Artyem Kynazev and engaged the young athletes in a mix of on-ice and off-ice training. The camp also included lectures by an international skating judge from Malaysia, Ms. Surayu Ismail, and sessions on sports nutrition and mental training by Dr. Kim Montaniel.

“In tropical countries like the Philippines where access to ice forms is very limited, it is an honor for SM Supermalls to provide athletes with a training ground in our ice rinks. Over the past 11 days, I have been happy that we were able to share them with our young Indian skaters who, together with their Filipino counterparts, had the honor of being mentored by figure skating Olympian, Mr. Artyem Kynazev,” said Mr. Hans T Sy, Chairman of PHSU and Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holding during the culminating activity held at The Rink in SM Megamall.

Ms. Laila Mala, Coordinator for the Southeast Asia Region of the International Skating Union Development Commission, and His Excellency Mr. Shambu S. During the culminating event, young figure skaters from the Philippines and their Indian counterparts performed a special number where they showcased their learnings from the camp. Dressed in their ice skating boots and costumes, the athletes performed a series of moves including leaps, spins and footwork with elegance.

SM Ice Skating has proven its value in the marketplace by hosting exciting events, providing a venue to promote not only family ties, but also foster camaraderie among friends and colleagues. SM ice rinks can be found at SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall and SM Seaside Cebu.
