Teaming up with Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas led a 3-point United States return in Friday’s final four-ball game to save a half-point tie against Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.
First Jon Rahm was responsible for 1 1/2 of Europe’s colon on opening day. He teamed up with Sergio Garcia in the morning for the only European victory, then with Tyrell Hatton in the afternoon for a draw with Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler.
In the afternoon’s other two four-ball games, Tony Finau and Harris English beat Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry 4 and 3, and Dustin Johnson and Xander Sc Chaudele beat Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger 2 and 1.
Johnson and ScHotele have each won twice, while McIlroy lost two games on the same day for the first time in his Ryder Cup career.
This is the United States’ biggest advance since taking a 6 1 / 2-1 1/2 lead in 1975, four years before the rest of Europe joined Britain and Ireland to try to make the Ryder Cup more competitive.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL is adding Monday night to its Wild Card weekend.
The league announced Friday that it will play one of its first six playoff games on Monday night, starting this season.
The NFL added a wild third team in every conference last season, then played three wildcard games on Saturday and three on Sunday in its first weekend of the playoffs.
The new schedule means the league will play two games on Saturday (4:35 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. ET), three Sundays (1:05 p.m., 4:40 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. ET) and one Monday (8:15 p.m. ET). The Wild Card weekend for these playoffs will run from January 15 to 17.
LONDON (AP) – Emma Raducanu has parted ways with her coach, less than two weeks after winning the US Open in qualifying.
Andrew Richardson coached Raducanu for two years at the youth level and partnered with her again in July on a short-term contract for the duration of her time in the United States before and during the US Open.
The 18-year-old Briton said on Friday she wanted a more experienced coach now that she will play in bigger events on the WTA Tour.
OBERSTDORF, Germany (AP) – Vincent Zhou won the men’s Nebelhorn Trophy competition on Friday, which secured a third appearance at the Beijing Olympics for the United States.
The Nebelhorn Trophy is the last qualifying competition for the Olympic Games next February.
Zhou entered the free skate first after winning the short program. The 2019 world bronze medalist went on to win the free skate with an aggregate score of 284.23 points, clearing the field by over 40 points.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Former UFC Champion Jon Jones was jailed in Las Vegas early Friday after an incident at Caesars Palace which police say led to his arrest for home battery and vehicle damage .
Details of the incident that led to Jones’ 5:45 a.m. arrest at the Las Vegas Strip Resort were not immediately released to the public by Las Vegas police.
Jail and court records showed Jonathan Dwight Jones, 34, posted $ 8,000 bail and was due in court on Saturday, with a date of Oct. 26 for prosecutors to file criminal charges. Charging the home battery is a crime. The vehicle charge is a felony, with damage reported to be over $ 5,000.
It was not immediately clear if Jones had a lawyer.
