DEMING — The 43rd Great American Duck Race is set to kick off on Thursday, Aug. 25 for a weekend of games, vendors, food and good old-fashioned duck racing.

The Deming Summer Event is back with events across the city, Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon August 28. through.

The Great American Duck Race was established in 1980 with many residents of Deming, surrounding areas and out of state enjoying the competitions. Duck racing is open to people of all ages and experiences.

Joanna Costilla, president of the Great American Duck Races, explained that it costs $5 to race a duck, but there is no registration form to fill out. Entrance fees must be paid at the ticket office.

“The biggest running rule is ‘don’t run your duck’ but make sure you encourage them to run/swim fast,” Costilla said in an email.

Head to McKinley Duck Down, Courthouse Park in Deming to watch the carnival and prepare for a race. There is no admission charge for the general festivities.

Note that all animals, including service animals, are not permitted near live ducks for safety reasons. Times for several outdoor events may change as monsoon rains continue to fall on the region.

Generally, there is something for everyone in the family.
