IQ Skateshop Brings Skating Center to State College

There’s a new hot spot for skateboarders in downtown State College.

IQ Skateshop, located at the corner of South Pugh Street and Calder Way, offers skateboards, suits, wheels, trucks, clothing, shoes and more to meet your skateboarding needs.

IQ Skateshop opened on August 28. Co-owners Jake Johnson, Clint Kunselman and Ben Wentz have teamed up to open it in hopes of creating a hub for area skateboarders – something that didn’t exist for Wentz and Johnson as they grew up in skating at State College.

“We want it to be a destination where people can come and find products that they can’t find, you know, anywhere else,” Wentz said.

Kunselman came to help Johnson and Wentz open IQ through his experience running his own skate store in DuBois. The trio saw a lot of beginners and skaters get back into the sport.

“The store has been like a conduit just to bring the skaters back and a place for them to come and meet,” Johnson said.

Unlike Wentz, Jake Johnson is not a Penn State graduate. Johnson has found success in a professional skateboarding career that began in 2007 and took him from his home to State College as he worked and traveled with sponsors for the past 14 years.

Johnson is hopeful the store can help enthusiastic new skaters get started. He also hopes to use his influence to be the voice of the skaters already in attendance. Johnson worked with State College Borough on plans for a new action sports park, which are still in development for High Point Park.

Clint Kunselman puts barcodes on the full sets exhibited by IQ.

Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Johnson and Wentz will be at 3 Dots Downtown, 137 E. Beaver Ave., showing off the new skate park concept with the use of virtual reality headsets. The public is invited to come and contribute to the design.
