At the southern end… Most ice roads are closed. A few ice anglers still venture out with ATVs or snowmobiles, mostly in search of big pike. Ice conditions vary widely and safety should be the first consideration.
Pike activity has increased for a lot this week and lots of pike over 40 inches have been caught. Tip ups with a fast rig, live sucker, frozen smelt or cisco were most successful in 5-15′.
Walleye and sauger season is open until April 14. Pike season open year round. The opening of fishing in MN is May 14th.
On the Rainy River… The Rainy River is open and anglers are fishing in open water on the Rainy River! Access to Nelson Park in Birchdale, MN opened this weekend and the Frontier boat launch opened 4-4-22.
The next boat ramp to the west is Vidas near Clementson, followed by Timber Mill Park in Baudette and finally Wheeler’s Point at the mouth of the river adjacent to Four Mile Bay. Things are opening up fast, watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page for updates.
Fishing is good with walleye and sturgeon caught. Lots of walleye with some big fish. As the water warms, more large females come up the river. The water is still a little cold for the big females, but it should only get better. All walleye angling is caught and released on the Four Mile River and Bay only until April 14th.
Jigs and frozen minnows or live minnows or a jig with a plastic are the go-to presentations. Slow trolling crankbaits upstream can be effective in finding big walleyes at this time of year.
Lots of sturgeon caught, mostly by unsuspecting walleye anglers. The sturgeons are active. Dates of the sturgeon season…
October 1 – April 23, 2022…Catch and release only, no tag needed
April 24 – May 7, 2022… 1 per calendar year. Fish must be 45″-50″ inclusive or over 75″. Fish must be immediately tagged and registered within 48 hours. No tag needed to catch and release
May 8 – May 15, 2022…Catch and release only, no tag needed
May 16 – June 30…Sturgeon fishing closed
To the NW corner… Resorts have retired fish houses for the year. Some residents still practice ice fishing with removable houses.
COVID testing requirements for crossing Canada were removed on April 1. Travelers should always be vaccinated and use the ArriveCan app.
There are different ways to get to the Angle.
1. Drive across Canada to the Angle
2. LOW Passenger Service (charter boat service on the lake while staying in MN)
3. Lake Country Air. (stays in MN, lands on water)
4. Take your own boat. (Safety first, this is a 40 mile ride over big water)
