GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado (KKCO) – As previously reported, the old Glacier Ice Arena was purchased earlier this year by an anonymous buyer and the new owners have now set an opening date.
The arena will officially open on Friday October 8 under new management with a new name, River City Sportplex. At that time, everything related to the rink will be open. Such as dealerships, public skating and rental equipment. But the remainder of the facility’s expansion will still be under construction for the next year or two.
“The grand opening of the River City Sportplex will take place on Friday, October 8,” said general manager Philip Flink. “We will be kicking off our opening week with the Colorado Avalanche game at a street hockey event this Saturday, Oct. 2 from 11 to 3.”
“The Avalanche is bringing a group of its part-time and full-time amateur development workers to blow up a street hockey rink for kids and adults,” said hockey director Jackson Wilson.
The free Saturday event will be held outdoors for registered participants. As well as information about the facility’s learn to skate program, hockey leagues, figure skating programs and free ice skate giveaways. Participants can register online at the Colorado Avalanche website or in person.
