An SMRT staff member was suspended from duty after being seen manhandling a skating skateboarder at the Esplanade MRT station.
Video of the incident appeared on social media and showed a skateboarder trying to skate towards the stairs at the entrance to the station.
In the middle of his approach to the stairs, a member of SMRT staff can be seen running towards the skater and pushing him off the skateboard.
Addressing the video, SMRT wrote on Facebook that they were aware of the incident, which took place on August 20 at around 10:25 p.m.
“We are sorry our staff overreacted,” said SMRT.
The public transport service provider wrote that the staff in question had previously told the skateboarder that skateboarding was not allowed on the station premises for the safety of commuters.
The post said: “When the staff saw the person skateboarding towards the stairs that other commuters were also using, the staff ran towards the person to prevent them from doing so.”
SMRT said a report had been made regarding the incident and that they were assisting TransCom with their investigations.
The suspended staff member will also “support” the proceedings.
