West Kelowna Warriors sign new goalie ahead of preseason opener – Kelowna Capital News

The West Kelowna Warriors’ roster for the 2021-22 season is starting to take shape.

Ahead of the team’s first preseason game on Friday, the club announced the signing of 17-year-old goalie Justin Katz and sent defenseman Corey McCann to the AJHL Blackfalds Bulldogs.

Katz impressed Warriors scouts during his two seasons with Deerfield Academy, an American hockey preparation school in Massachusetts.

“Justin is a very strong goaltender technically who never gives up with free pucks and competes at all times,” said Warriors general manager and head coach Simon Ferguson, calling him one of the best. goaltenders for his age group in the US high school preseason league.

The 6’1 “185-pound goalie is looking forward to some time on the ice after a season largely sidelined by COVID-19.

“We were pretty confined to school and couldn’t play a lot of games which was very difficult mentally,” Katz said.

“But we trained and lifted every day so I improved a lot on and off the ice.”

With McCann on his way to Blackfalds, Ferguson said he will have the opportunity to play key minutes as he struggles to attract scholarship opportunities. The move also cuts the training camp roster to 23 players – 13 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders – ahead of the team’s opener against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at Royal LePage Place on Friday.

Warriors season game tickets are now on sale. The arena will be maintained at 50 percent of its capacity with proof of vaccination required.

Tickets are available on warriorswestkelow.ca.
