Windy Lake Provincial Park is the place to go for a complete winter experience in Ontario

Windy Lake Provincial Park is one of those places that appreciates the colder months with heated yurts and countless outdoor activities for an unforgettable winter getaway.

This park just north of Sudbury and five hours from Toronto flies under the radar despite being a unique spot for winter hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Rental of the park’s two rustic cabins and four yurts is also available year-round. Good news for anyone making the long drive from Toronto.

Both accommodations are kept warm with a propane fire pit in the cabins and an electric heater in the yurts and outdoor barbecue grills and fire pits are kept out front. The yurts are also located near the trails.

The only trail in the park follows what was once the rim of a huge crater created by a meteorite that crashed here billions of years ago and overlooks the frozen lake.

The Onaping Falls Nordic Ski Club also offers access to 15 kilometers of trails for even more skiing and snowshoeing adventures. A day or weekend pass, as well as rentals, are available at the park office or ski lodge.

Another winter pastime that visitors can easily take part in is ice fishing with a complete ice fishing package. Park staff provide all necessary equipment and shelter on the ice. Just make sure you have a valid fishing license.

Windy Lake Provincial Park is known for its wide sandy beach once the snow starts to melt, so a summer round trip should be in order for beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts.
